Sourdough Donuts

And so the sourdough saga continues. I basically want to make ALL THE SOURDOUGH things now. We have been on a donut kick lately, so why not try sourdough donuts? I tried this recipe from https://practical-stewardship.com

A few things I love about this recipe:

  1. They are free of refined sugar! I used organic maple syrup and it worked great.
  2. They are baked, making them easier and healthier than fried donuts.
  3. They are dairy free!

I followed the instructions and mixed up the first part of the dough the night before. In the morning, I added the rest of the ingredients then popped them into the oven. My home smelled like a donut bakery, which is obviously the best smell to have in the morning. Twenty minutes later, we had fresh, warm donuts ready for breakfast.

The only really unhealthy part of these was the topping. Maple iced donuts are one of my guilty pleasures. These donuts were just begging to be doused in the mapley goodness. I also did a vanilla iced donut for Cheyenne, which was equally as delicious.

Maple glaze on the left, vanilla glaze on the right!

Simple Glaze Recipe:

Maple Glaze:

Combine real maple syrup (start with about 1 tbsp of syrup) and powdered sugar until the desired consistency is reached. Dip your donuts and let glaze set for a few minutes before serving.

Vanilla Glaze:

Combine unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice) with powdered sugar and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract until desired consistency is reached.

These made just over a dozen donuts and there was no way we needed to eat that many in one sitting. (Could have eaten that many? Yes. Needed to? No.) After the glaze set, I placed the whole pan of donuts in the freezer for 30 minutes to flash freeze them. I removed the donuts from the freezer after the 30 minutes and brought out some wax paper. Each donut was individually wrapped in wax paper, placed inside a ziplock back, and finally returned to the freezer.

When you are ready to enjoy your donuts, simply remove from the freezer the night before (or at least 3 hours in advance) and let defrost on the counter. They taste just as fresh and yummy as the day they were made! If you’re in a rush, you can also wrap them in a paper towel and microwave for 10 to 15 seconds.
