Tuna Rice: A Family Recipe

Family recipes. They really are my favorite, can you tell? Tuna rice may seem a little strange at first, but really it’s quite addicting. Not only is it yummy, but kids love it and it’s budget friendly! I especially love how quickly this meal comes together. We eat tuna rice quite often for lunch around here!

So what exactly is tuna rice? Don’t worry, I’m not telling you to just throw a can of tuna into some rice and call it good. Nope! Instead, you will be adding butter (or butter substitute such as Nutiva butter flavored coconut oil) into your rice along with some flour. After those have dissolved into the rice, you add chicken broth until your rice reaches a more creamy consistency. Then add your tuna and we always serve with steamed peas all mixed in.

Not a fan of tuna fish? No worries! Shredded chicken tastes wonderful as well! Give this unique meal a try and you may just be surprised by how much you love it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rice cooked according to package
  • 2 tbsp butter or butter substitute
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1/4- 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 can tuna, drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Steamed peas for serving

Directions:

Once rice has been cooked keep pot over the stove top on low. Add butter and flour and stir until combined. Then add in chicken broth until rice becomes slightly creamy but not too liquidy. Lastly, add in your tuna and stir until completely warmer through. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve with steamed peas on top or on the side! Enjoy!
